I swear, every time we visit Nathaniel’s family in Black Forest, I fall more in love. Cody did, too; with leaping and bounding on their property and chasing mule deer wherever he wanted (sometimes onto other people’s lots and into the road). It’s incredibly beautiful there, and I miss the mountains and the trees, but I’ve certainly gotten used to the lower altitude in Kansas.

On the morning of Christmas Eve, N and I walked Cody around the neighborhood where I grew up and to this lake where I spent a lot of days in my childhood.
